This is where John McCain was imprisoned, the infamous Hoa Lo Prison in Hanoi, after crashing his plane and getting plucked out of the water by the Viet Minh. These pictures, plus his uniform, are at the former Hanoi Hilton, which is now a museum.

McCain alleges that he endured starvation and torture while he was there. I watched a documentary on the prison and a man who worked as a prison guard at the time of Johnny's incarceration said that although he liked McCain for trying to build better relations between America and Vietnam, he resented McCain's lying about his treatment while at the Hanoi Hilton; he said that John McCain was never tortured. As it is when lies are promulgated on either side, the truth remains obscure.

There were many pictures of prisoners playing badminton, playing basketball, playing cards, playing football, decorating Christmas trees, doing some gardening and cooking in the kitchen. It might have been propaganda, but their imprisonment looked more like a holiday stay cum workshop at the Comfort Inn in Sacramento.
