There are amazing wadis (channels or valleys) in Oman for swimming and hiking. As you hike beside the wadi there are a number of waterfalls and fresh water pools where you can cool off from the heat. Wadi Bani Khalid was southeast from Ibra, where I was teaching at Al Sharkiya University.
