Ingapirca, a 15th-century fortress, is located two hours north of Cuenca beside the village of El Tambo. The valley is dotted with farms on a brilliant blanket of green. The day I was there the blue, turquoise, and yellow roofs were in marked contrast to the black clouds that threatened rain all day, but when the sun finally broke through the roofs all blazed with colour. At the top of the ridge beside Ingapirca I was alone with the llamas and cows that grazed nearby and I enjoyed how empty the place was for that day. The ruins stand at the outer edge of a circular ridge. The main platform holds the Temple of the Sun, which was used for religious purposes. The structure itself has amazing Incan stonework.
